Special Olympics & IFRC Grants Are a Success

In an effort to support the growing country level collaboration between global partner International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and Special Olympics, a small humanitarian diplomacy grant initiative was opened to 13 Programs in August 2014 through joint funding from both organizations. Humanitarian Diplomacy is an institutionalized activity throughout the Red Cross and Red Crescent world, and the partnership with Special Olympics has opened an opportunity for this advocacy to be focused on individuals with intellectual disabilities. 4 grants were awarded to in Austria, Jamaica, Indonesia and Peru. The grants had an enormous and diverse impact - be it starting a new local Program in rural Peru, having athlete leaders gain knowledge, confidence and importantly, their voice in Indonesia and Jamaica or thousands of youth reading inspired stories of inclusion in Austria, the project exceeded all expectations and demonstrated the true depth, scope and value of the partnership between Special Olympics and the IFRC.
