A Very Special Christmas

On December 3, in commemoration of United Nations' International Day of Persons with Disabilities, U.S. Ambassador to China H.E. Mr. Max Baucus and his wife Ms. Melodee Hanes hosted “A Very Special Christmas” party for Special Olympics in their Beijing residence. Special Olympics Chinese gymnastics champion athletes Xing Le, Wang Yue and former Special Olympics International Global Messenger Xu Chuang; athlete representative Su Fang; Beijing athlete representative Jia Sirui, and athletes from Beijing Haidian Special Education School were invited to this festivity. The party began with the Christmas carol performed by athletes from Beijing Haidian Special Education School and students from Western Academy of Beijing. This new ‘Unified Choir’ sang the classic ballad Jingle Bells and We Wish You A Merry Christmas for the audience. Ambassador Baucus welcomed everyone in his opening remarks and invited athlete representative Jia Sirui; family leader Han Rongfang to address the audience. Coinciding with the event, we presented annual “Inspiration of The Year” award to honor representatives of Special Olympics athletes and supporters who have extraordinary stories and achievements in the year of 2015. Special Olympics East Asia Senior Advisory Council member Ms. Melodee Hanes and Special Olympics China Executive Vice Chairperson, Director of Sports of China Disabled Persons’ Federation Ms. Zhao Sujing unveiled the recipients Su Fang as the Most Inspiring Athlete, and Ying Weiwu as The Most Inspiring Supporter. Special Olympics East Asia Senior Advisory Council member Mr. Pan Shiyi and Special Olympics Board Member, Global Ambassador Ms. Yang Lan presented the award. More than 50 Special Olympics’ supporters were invited to attend the event, which was sponsored by AVSC Record Trust, the single most successful benefit recording series in musical history that was created by Jimmy Lovine and Eunice Kennedy Shriver in 1987 for Special Olympics.
